What are your thoughts on this new/current generation of students? Have you noticed a change in the way they behave and interact with their friends, colleagues, and professors? What are your thoughts on how they behave in class? Have you had any problems or issues with your students’ behavior?

How to get Students to Talk in Class

Several of you have expressed dismay about your students’ in-class participation. Here is a great article from Stanford that offers several strategies for How to Get Students to Talk in Class. Some of the things they suggest are: decentralize the classroom—make students the focus and involve them in discussion with each other and not just you; give students time to think; encourage all comments, even those that seem off target; and the use of active learning strategies.

College in the 21st Century

Recently there has been significant discussion on the purpose of education in the 21^st century. What are we trying to teach or share with our students? What should contemporary college graduates need to know and be able to do? Tomorrow’s Professor presents a fascinating report (College Learning for the New Global Century) on these very questions.
