At the risk of repeating myself, I wanted to remind everyone of several big TEACH events that are coming up in the next few weeks. If you have any questions about your TEACH project, peer observations, or workshop hours, please let us know!

Micah

Workshop hours are due on Friday, April 17^th. If you have questions regarding your cumulative hours, please contact your consultant.
Peer group follow-up consultations should be completed by April 28^th. If you have any questions about the peer observations, let us know!
TEACH applications are now open online at www.tltc.ttu.edu/teach/apply. Please tell your friends about the program, former TEACH fellows are one of our best ways of recruiting and we really value your recommendations! You should be receiving some postcards through campus mail in the next few days that you can share with anyone you think would be interested.
Your TEACH project poster is due to Ching Lee on Monday, April 20^th and your TEACH project documentation is due to the TEACH staff on Wednesday, April 22^nd. Please let us know if you have any questions about your project!

Hello! I hope that everyone had a fantastic spring break and is ready to finish out the semester! Can you believe we’re so close to the end? Time flies. We’ve been sending out emails, but I wanted to post some additional reminders to help keep everything on your radar. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Reminders:

Please be sure to check your workshop hours and let us know if there is something you attended that you didn’t receive credit for. Also be sure that you’re signed up for enough sessions to complete your 20 hour requirement.
If you haven’t scheduled your peer group observation follow-up session, please email me (micah.meixner@ttu.edu) so that we can get that taken care of. The follow-up consultations need to be completed by April 28^th. If you have any questions about the peer observations, let us know!

Hello and welcome back! Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start planning your semester:

Have you scheduled your initial consultation with your new TEACH consultant? You should be hearing from your new consultant soon, if you haven’t heard something by the end of the week let us know!
In case you haven’t been online to schedule your spring workshops, we have implemented a new scheduler…everything should be running smoothly, but let us know if you have problems. You need to sign up for your spring workshop hours by Friday, January 30. To log in to classes, follow this link and sign in with your eRaider. There are some great sessions this spring!
Don’t forget to take the StrengthsQuest assessment and sign up for the session on January 21. It is going to be a fantastic session that you won’t want to miss…you might learn something about yourself! If you have questions, let Micah know.

Have you completed your first videotape observation and SGID? If not, be sure to double check your calendar to make sure that everything is scheduled! Also don’t forget about peer observations…when is your follow-up session? Be sure to email your peer observation feedback to your consultant or Micah before your peer group meeting.

Activity Contract: Your activity contract is due to your consultant on Oct. 9^th. If you have questions about what the activity contract entails, check out the TEACH Wiki and/or talk to your TEACH consultant.

TEACH Lunch Series: There is a TEACH Lunch Series this Friday, Oct. 10^th at noon. Past TEACH fellows will be sharing their experiences with teaching uncomfortable topics and teaching controversial material.

TEACH Coffee Talk: We are so excited to begin our new Coffee Talk series and hope that you will join us Tuesday, September 30^th to discuss student motivation and preparedness. If you are interested in attending, please be sure to register online and email Micah with any questions or specific topics you’d like to discuss.

John Burns Conference: Be sure to sign up for the 7^th Annual John M. Burns Conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. There will be two sessions on Friday, October 3^rd featureing Dr. Susie Whittington who will be presenting the following sessions: Classrooms: Your Database for Publishing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (could be helpful for your teach project) and Teaching with Flair’\(Fla(a)/(e)r, n. [fr. Flairier 1: natural ability or capacity]. Plus, lunch will be served! Be sure to register online and call Tina to let her know if you'll be there for lunch.

Peer Observation Consultations: I think we’ve heard from almost everyone, but if you haven’t set up an appointment with your consultant for your fall peer group consultation, please schedule that as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please let you consultant know!

TEACH Coffee Talk: We are so excited to begin our new Coffee Talk series and hope that you will join us next Tuesday, September 30^th to discuss student motivation and preparedness. Peer Observation Consultations: If you haven’t set up an appointment with your consultant for your fall peer group consultation, please schedule that as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please let you consultant know!

Mentors: Have you met with your mentor? Please be sure to schedule an initial meeting with your mentor sometime soon so you can begin to establish what type of role your mentor will take in the completion of your Teaching Portfolio and TEACH Project. As you schedule this meeting, remember that your Activity Contract is due on October 9^th and must be signed by your mentor.

TEACH Lunch Series: Are you having problems coming up with a TEACH project? Then don’t miss this week’s TEACH Lunch Series! Several of last year’s TEACH fellows will be there to talk to you about their TEACH project and what it takes to be successful in that endeavor. We’ll meet in room 153 from 12:00-1:00 and lunch will be served. Be sure to register online so we can get a head count for food.

Registration for your fall workshop hours was due last Friday. If you haven’t signed up for at least 10 hours, please be sure to go online and sign up for more classes!

Please set up an appointment with your consultants for your fall peer group consultation by Friday, September 19th. Remember that the observations don’t have to be done by Friday…just the final meeting date. If you have any questions, please let your consultant know!

Hello! Don’t forget that your fall workshop registration is due by Friday, September 12^th. By Friday you need to have signed up for at least 10 workshop hours. If you are interested in attending more than 10 hours of workshops, please do! You know we love to see you around the TLTC as much as possible! Also be sure to watch for the TEACH events such as the Lunch Series and Coffee Talks. These are great opportunities to earn some credit and get to know your cohort!

Also, if you haven’t been in contact with your peer groups please take a minute and send out an email or two. By Friday, Septermber 19^th we would like for you to determine a schedule for your peer observations and your consultation at the end of the semester. Be sure to let your consultant know when you have gotten everything scheduled…it will save you from our nagging. J If you have any questions, let us know!

Last thing, I believe that everyone has selected a mentor, so we will begin contacting those individuals within the next week. We will officially invite them to serve as your mentor and will outline details of the program and tell them a little bit about what you are thinking of doing for your TEACH project.

What They Didn't Teach You in Graduate School

Congratulations! You’re almost finished with the semester! Hopefully everything is running smoothly and wrapping up well now that you’ve completed your TEACH projects and requirements.

Here is one more word of wisdom for this semester. Check out this article from The Chronicle on What They Didn’t Teach You in Graduate School. It offers some great suggestions on how to begin your career, as well as how to sustain it. One particularly relevant piece of advice they offer is not to take forever in graduate school. As the authors of this article, Paul Gray and David E. Drew, say: “Don't feel that you need to create the greatest work that Western civilization ever saw. Five years from now the only thing that will matter is whether you finished.”

Thanks for all of your hard work this year! We have all enjoyed working with you and we wish you the best of luck!

Preparing Classes for Summer School

Many of you will be teaching classes this summer and may be beginning to think about preparing for your course. Whether you begin your preparations now or at after the semester is over, this article from the University of Virginia on Summer Session Strategies may be helpful as you start to prepare.

Reminders!!
Don’t forget that your TEACH projects are DUE next week! Posters are due to Ching by Monday, April 21and the project documentation is due on Wednesday, April 23 by 5:00pm. Please turn in a hard copy of your project documentation. While your consultant is happy to look things over via email, we need a hard copy to display with your poster.

Also, workshop hours should be completed by Friday, April 18. If you are short on hours and have not spoken with your consultant, please do so as soon as possible.

Campus Interviews, Part 2

Last week’s blog discussed how and when to talk about your research interests in a campus interview. Here is another article from the Chronicle, Preparing for Campus Interviews, this one is more general than last weeks and it offers some great advice. You’ll notice a theme…preparation!
Have you completed your SGID and videotapings or are they scheduled in the near future? If not, be sure to double check your calendar to make sure that everything (including your follow-up consultation) is scheduled!

Have you observed your peer partner? Have you and your partner met with your consultant? Be sure to schedule those meetings and contact your consultant once your observations are complete.

Overcoming Procrastination

If you’re like most people, you probably have 101 things going on in your life and are working hard to balance everything that is going on. One issue that plays a significant role in that balancing act is procrastination. If you don’t have a problem with procrastination, congratulations! For those who do struggle with procrastination, here is a short article from Tomorrow’s Professor on how to Overcome Procrastination. It offers some simple but effective advice for getting yourself on track to completing your project.

Speaking of projects…don’t forget that your TEACH Project Progress Report is due this Friday (Feb. 29). Please turn it in via email to your consultant by Friday afternoon. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! We’re all happy to help!

The Advancing Teaching and Learning Conference is this week and we would love for you to come! If you haven't already signed up, please take a look a the conference website and make plans to come when you're available. There are some great pre-conference sessions offered all day Thursday and then Dr. Todd Zakrajsek will be presenting a morning and afternoon session on Friday. This is a great opportunity for some workshop hours and I know you'll learn some new strategies.

Also don't forget that your TEACH Project Progress Reports are due next Friday. If you have any questions, check the TEACH Wiki and let your consultant know if you are still confused.
